NFL Super Bowl 2018

An estimated 103.4 million people across the globe watched live television coverage of the NFL Super Bowl 2018, when the Philadelphia Eagles beat defending champions the New England Patriots. The annual event traditionally attracts the second largest viewing audience in the world, surpassed only by the Champions League football final.NFL Super Bowl

As the prestigious championship game of the American National Football League, the Super Bowl is the highlight of the regular season. Philadelphia Eagles beat New England Patriots by 41 points to 33 in the 52nd annual Super Bowl, which was a high scoring thriller held at the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was televised by NBC.

The stadium was packed with 73,000 football fans, who soaked up the electric atmosphere as the Eagles prevented veteran Patriots’ quarterback, 40-year-old Tom Brady, from winning a record sixth title. The Patriots had been favourites, but the Eagles pulled off a stunning upset to claim victory.

The Eagles, whose home stadium is Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, and the Patriots, whose home stadium is the Gillette Stadium, in Foxborough, Massachusetts, are members of the National Football Conference East division. The Patriots became the only team in NFL history to play in 10 Super Bowls.

As the underdogs in the run-up to the game, the Eagles upset the Patriots’ victory plans – as New England were seeking their third title in four years. This resulted in thousands of fans swarming into the streets of Philadelphia to celebrate the stunning win.

The half time show at the Super Bowl is as famous as the game itself, and this year’s entertainment was no exception. Many world-famous artists over the years have hosted the half time show, including the legendary Beyoncé, Madonna and British rock band Coldplay.

This year, the half time entertainment was provided by Justin Timberlake, who performed some of his classic hits including Mirrors, My Love, Senorita, Cry Me a River, Suit and Tie, his 2016 chart topper Can’t Stop the Feeling, and Filthy from his new album, Man of the Woods.

The Super Bowl was held in Prince’s home town of Minneapolis, so Timberlake also performed a tribute to the singing superstar. He sang I Would Die 4 U in unison with a massive video projection of the late star.

The half time entertainment was sponsored by soft drinks giant Pepsi and began with American TV host Jimmy Fallon introducing Timberlake. It was the first time since the 2012 Super Bowl’s half time show in Indianapolis, that pyrotechnics weren’t used throughout the performance. Instead, this year’s show had plenty of lasers and video screens providing some stunning visual effects.

The US Bank Stadium is an enclosed indoor stadium that opened in 2016. It was constructed on the site of the former Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome, which closed in 2013. Building work on the US Bank Stadium took three years to complete, at a reported cost of $1.129 billion. It is the home stadium of NFL team, the Minnesota Vikings.
