Some of the UK’s Award-winning Offices

What makes a great office building? There are many elements that go into creating a beautiful place to work: the architecture of the building, the interior layout, the facilities and in recent years, elements like sustainability and flexible use of space too. If you’re looking to bring a fresh new look and feel to your workplace, take a look at these five award-winning office buildings for inspiration.

Berghaus HQ, Sunderland

The head office of outdoor clothing and equipment brand Berghaus is an example of how an office environment can demonstrate a brand’s values. This industrial-looking space shows how a branded office isn’t just about a colour scheme or carpets featuring the logo: their inclusion of a sky rail and a climbing rope staircase won them a national award in 2016.

The Enterprise Centre, University of East Anglia, Norwich

The Enterprise Centre has won multiple awards since it opened: its low carbon design sees natural, locally sourced materials making up 70% of its structure, and the building has received certification for both sustainability and energy efficiency. Award judges have also praised the space for its flexibility and its provision of smaller spaces for start-up businesses.

Alphabeta, Finsbury Square, London

£40 million was spent on the redevelopment of Royal London House (now known as Alphabeta), which has won awards for being the best refurbished/recycled workplace. It’s perfect for cyclists, who can cycle in at ground level and down to the basement to store their bikes securely for the day. The new space combines both modern and recycled materials, with the old arches and staircases of the original building still in situ, some of which have been left exposed to create a quirky and contemporary space.

Number One Riverside, Rochdale

This building – home to 33 council departments – is another award winner, this time thanks to its design which promotes new ways of working. It creates “a sense of community, engagement and social transparency”. As well as allowing different council departments to work side by side, the building is also home to a public library, a cafe and more – bringing the public and council workers together.

The Council House, Derby

The Council House in Derby won BCO’s best refurbished/recycled office award in 2014 and it’s easy to see why. Instead of taking the easy option and moving to new premises, Derby City Council instead refitted their existing red brick building to make it fit for purpose in the 21st century. The space was transformed to accommodate six times the number of workers (and in a better environment) as well as additional spaces – and all the building’s energy comes from hydroelectric power from the neighbouring River Derwent.
