Royle refreshment

An award-winning sport and leisure club has just refreshed its health club changing facilities to keep it on trend in the fast-moving fitness market.

Currently club of year in UK Active’s annual Flame Awards, Castle Royle Golf & Country Club, near Maidenhead, includes a members-only championship 18-hole course sited in 180 acres of scenic rolling parkland with “some of the best greens in Berkshire and beyond”.

Bespoke changing room furniture manufacturer and installer Crown Sports Lockers have worked with leading sport, fitness and leisure operator The Club Company for well over a decade, providing high-end locker installs for the group’s sites.

Reflecting the pace of change in health and fitness tastes, Castle Royle were anxious to keep ahead of the curve and asked Crown to refresh the female fitness changing areas.

The scope of the work included fitting new locker doors, mirrors, grooming station and extra changing cubicles, all in an Egger woodgrain finish, while retaining the locker bodies and refreshing the female washroom with a Corian vanity and WC cubicles with IPS panels in a Polyrey compact laminate finish.

“Health club changing facilities often fade faster than those in golf clubs,” said Crown Sports Lockers project manager Spencer Grimwood. “Throughput is far higher and styles and fashions dictate that the look of fitness locker rooms can date quicker too.

“Although the lockers were fitted about ten years ago, the locker bodies were still fully serviceable so Castle Royle were seeking a cosmetic upgrade only.”

Open all but two days a year, the club offers a spread of sport and leisure including state-of-the-art gym, steam room, sauna, Aura spa, adult-only bar, pulse bar, golf bar, driving range and club shop, while Castle Royle was the first in The Club Company UK’s estate to provide crèche facilities for junior members – available for children aged four weeks to eight.

The Club Company UK itself has lifted trade body UK Active’s operator of the year award four times, while several of its 13 sites have clinched the coveted club of the year accolade across various categories.

A Club Company UK preferred supplier, Crown has also recently fitted out the operator’s Woodbury Park site – bought in 2016 and once owned by Formula 1 World Champion Nigel Mansell – with wet and dry changing facilities.

“We gave Crown a tight turnround of just six days to complete the Castle Royle work, which involved sectioning off the men’s changing rooms to accommodate ladies while theirs was refashioned,” says project manager Mark Warne.

“Past experience told me they could make and fit the bespoke doors within schedule and with minimal fuss and so it proved. I find the company to be amenable, accommodating and professional in their approach. They produce top-end work, finishes and quality.”
