Hotel leisure upgrade – Great for business

Family-owned Ilsington Country House Hotel in Newton Abbot lies within Dartmoor National Park and commands stunning views across historic landscapes.

Making a splash

The 25-bed destination wanted to upgrade its outdated 1980s swimming pool, sauna and whirlpool spa, housed in a separate building, to cater for today’s demands.

After conducting an extensive feasibility study into developing an integrated spa and associated facilities within the main hotel, director Richard Hassell, commissioned Ashton House Design to develop designs for spa changing areas and finishes, which in turn brought in Crown for the fit out – the latest of several projects they have collaborated on.

The seal grey, beach-effect changing provision features lockers incorporating solid oak shaker doors with random driftwood effect inset panels, vanities, upholstered seating and wall panelling, generating a restful ambience chiming with the spa’s restorative values.

“Since the new spa opened 18 months ago, we have doubled membership,” reports Richard. “Our spa day and weekend packages are massive too. A year after the new facility opened turnover had risen 20% – that’s huge growth for us.”
